NICHOLAS Hunt and Bethan Burley starred in the Dorset Combined Events Championships at Millfield.

English Schools decathlon champion Hunt gave a day-one masterclass, amassing 3,753 points at half-way. He ran 100m in 11.57s and long-jumped a wind-assisted 6.52m before achieving a 15.58m shot putt, a 1.99m high jump and 53.64s for 400m.

Severe weather constrained the athletes on day two – 15.67s for 100m hurdles into a 3.5m/s headwind, 38.52m discus, 3.50m pole vault, 44.03m javelin and 6:09.86 for 1500m left Hunt with a final total of 6,366 points.

Burley, meanwhile, won the junior girls pentathlon, posting personal bests in four events, (12.40s 75m hurdles, 10.82m shot, 1.42m high jump, 4.33m long jump, 2:36.12 800m).

Dorset’s quartet of Burley, Bournemouth AC duo Olivia Galloway and Iona Sheerin, plus Verity Cowell, outpointed their counterparts in the parallel Somerset championships.

Wimborne AC’s Ryan Long beat all but one of his rivals in the intermediate boys’ octathlon with a 14.69s 100m hurdles into a strong headwind, 10.86m shot putt, 32.11m discus throw and 1.65m high jump among his highlights.

BAC’s Glenn Balfour scored 15.28s for 80m hurdles and 2:21.82 for 800m as he placed fourth across both counties in the junior boys’ pentathlon.

Intermediate Girls Heptathlon: 7 Angelina Laake (Stur Newton School) 3,073, 11 Hannah Westhenry (All Saints) 2,794, 17 Imogen Slade (Colfox) 2,174.

Junior Girls Pentathlon: 1 Bethan Burley (Canford) 2,751, 3 Olivia Gallo-way 2,356, 6 Iona Sheerin (BAC) 2,25.

Minor Girls Quadrathlon: 6 Fleur Dutton (Motcombe Sch) 508.
