SWIM Bournemouth made a flying start as they began their campaign for a third consecutive Southern Junior League title.

The champions won 35 of the 49 events in their round one gala at Rossmore to build a 53-point victory margin over nearest challengers Christchurch Seagulls.

Bournemouth’s 9yrs and 10yrs girls won all their races while the 11-year-olds won five out of six, as did their 10-year-old boys.

Robbie Hemmings and Guy Selwood provided five of Poole’s six victories between them, Hemmings winning the 9yrs 50m butterfly and backstroke and the 10/u 50m backstroke, Selwood the 11/u 50m freestyle and breaststroke. Will Longhurst was the other winner in the 9yrs 50m freestyle.

  •  Ryan Openshaw won medals on all four strokes to lead a 30-medal haul for Poole at the Salisbury Stingrays Open.

The nine-year-old came first in the 9yrs 100m medley, second in the 50m freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly and third in the 50m backstroke.

Jasmin Oliver-House set a regional qualifying time as she added the 14yrs 100m backstroke gold to silver in the 50 and 100m freestyle and bronze in the 50m backstroke.

Max Avery also won four medals – gold in the 11yrs 100m backstroke, silver in the 50 and 100m freestyle and bronze in the 50m backstroke.

Gold also went to Robbie Hemmings in the 9yrs 50m freestyle, Will Longhurst in the 9yrs 50m breaststroke and Finlay Webb in the 11yrs 100m breaststroke.

  • Poole’s Jasmine McCrea will have the option to compete in at least 10 events at the regional age group championships in June.

The 12-year-old found gold elusive at the Bournemouth open meet but she won two silver medals and a bronze as well as doubling her tally of regional times and improving times she already had.
