Tennis: Toby reaches doubles final in French tournament

7:00am Friday 10th May 2013

DORSET ace Toby Samuel yet again demonstrated his star quality as he produced another very promising display on the European stage. Samuel represented Great Britain at the recent Tennis Europe Junior Tour event in France and he impressed by reaching the latter stages of both the singles and doubles competitions of the boys’ under-11s age group. In the singles draw, he de-feated Thibault Dereeper 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the opening round, and recovered from a set down to beat Jules Fescaux 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in his next match. Samuel displayed some of his best tennis in the third round as he cruised past Leo Deflandre, winning 6-3, 6-0 to earn a place in the last eight. However, the Dorset star’s singles bid then came to an end and he was forced to shift his focus to the doubles event. Samuel, partnered by fellow Brit Benjamin Heynold, won their opening match 6-0, 6-1, followed by a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Samuel’s singles opponent Fescaux and Theo Reulle in the last eight. In the semi-final, Samuel and Heynold bounced back from a set down to beat Quentin Kouvtanovitch and Timo Legout 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6). In the title match, they faced their toughest test yet as they took on the Dutch duo of Liam Liles and Thijmen Loof. A bright start from Samuel and Heynold saw them take the opener 7-5, but their opponents responded to level at 7-5 to send the final into a deciding champion’s tie-break. Samuel and Heynold were beaten 10-1 and finished runners-up.
