Bond hoping to secure Ward loan deal
 |
| HIGHLY-RATED: Joel Ward |
CHERRIES boss Kevin Bond is hoping to tie up a season-long loan deal for highly-rated Portsmouth defender Joel Ward.
The 18-year-old trained with Bond's squad last month and also appeared in Cherries' friendlies against Bristol City, Dorchester and Eastleigh.
Ward, who hails from Emsworth, returned from a lengthy injury lay-off last season to earn his first pro contract at Fratton Park.
And Bond is keen to secure the teenager's services ahead of the new season to add much-needed cover to Cherries' defensive ranks.
Bond told the Daily Echo: "I'm looking to take Joel on a long-term loan. I think he showed a great deal of promise while he was here and it's an area where we are very light."
Ward's Pompey team-mate Matt Ritchie, who also spent time with Cherries last month, is understood to be pursuing other options.
However, Bond is still keen on bringing ex-Pompey, Southend and Oxford midfielder Carl Pettefer to Dean Court.
The 26-year-old joined Cherries for the start of pre-season and has again linked up with Bond's squad in training at Canford School this week.
Bond said: "Carl is a great pro and did very well at Southend. He can play anywhere across the middle of the park, is as honest as the day is long and will run tirelessly for you.
"I would really like to find room for him if I could. I think he would be very handy and I would hope to establish whether or not we can take him in the next few days."
Bond says he is also still actively searching for additional firepower, with Jo Kuffour and Brett Pitman his only two recognised strikers.
"Finding a striker to sign who is surplus to requirements at his club or without a club is unlikely so that may be a loan situation," said Bond.
"But we're still exploring every possibility and it's a work-in-progress situation to see if we can unearth somebody."
Although Chester's Paul Rutherford and Sheffield United's Nicky Travis have returned to their respective clubs, Bond says he will continue to monitor the pair.
Rutherford and Travis, who both featured in friendlies against Dorchester and Eastleigh, still have a year remaining on their existing contracts.
Bond is unlikely to pursue his interest in MK Dons trialist Craig Dobson, who lined up against Eastleigh at the Silverlake Stadium on Saturday.

Can anyone explain how every player that Pompey deign to lend us is "highly-rated"?

Simple! Pompey are a premiership top half team, why would they offer a 18 year old a 1 year contract if they didn't rate him highly.

What a shame Rutherford has gone back. I'm sure finances played a big roll but he is a great talent. Chester fans can't believe their luck at the mo.
I hope we do pursue him later if we can afford to. If not when we play Chester this season he probably come back and haunt us!!!
Good luck for Saturday Lads.......UTCIAD

The problem with Rutherford is that we can't sign him whilst we remain in Administration and this very much ties Bond's hands. I do hope that a decision is reached at todays meeting of the FA. As far as I can see Kevin is doing all he can to build a team that cab compete in very difficult circumstances.[bold]bold[/bold]

Well I thought we were reasonably staffed at the back to this Ward possibility. If he comes he will automatically get a guaranteeed first team place. Who would he oust anyone know? Tough tall centre-forward Harry please?

Did anyone hear Kevin Bond on radio 5 last night. He is expecting a 15 point penalty but...it could be more..it could be less. The aim this season is to stay in this league.
Mick Harford of Luton said they are putting together a good team and will go out aiming to win every match.
The Rotherham chairman would not be drawn on the subject of points deduction. He said the FA have a very difficult job and the club would abide by their decision.
Only one person interviewed sounded like a wet weekend in Brighton. I hope he is more positive with the players before saturdays game.

Must be bringing him in to cover for injuries and illness don't forget we still need to put subs on the bench, I always love it when they are highly rated I think that's code for I have never seen him play but my mate at Portsmouth said, football reporters make me laugh.

We still need two more strikers to provide competition and cover for injuries, suspension, illness, loss of form etc.GOALS WIN MATCHES.
All the signings to date are of players who hopefully will enable us not to lose matches.Come on Kevin lets see some positivity and attacking intention.

Ward will make our defence very strong, but we do need another striker.

For God's sake . . . . FA or FL, what does it matter. I'm sure everyone knows that when someone says FA, it should really be the FL !!! Not really any need to pick up on it everytime . . .

Changing the subject, shame the Echo didn't put a report in of the Christchurch FC v AFC Bournemouth X1 match on monday night. Entertaining game with very young squad representing Cherries. At least there's lots to look forward to in Youth (and Reserve) set up this season

Joel Ward has been a regular in both the Portsmouth Accademy team that was very successful last season and in the reserves team. He is a very solid young defender, fit and very keen, I reckon he will be a good addition to the squad and keep people on their toes for their positions, competition for positions is always a healthy thing surely ?
