Rats on top of novice league

WAREHAM and District Water-Rats consolidated their position as leaders of the new Dorset Novice League with a second-round victory at Bridport.

They are level on league points with Christchurch and New Milton Seagulls but ahead on gala points, setting the scene for an exciting six-team final at Littledown on March 13.

Olivia Hunter and Tasha Way were both double winners for Wareham.

Ten-year-old Hunter won the 12/u 50m butterfly and backstroke in 47.08 and 48.38 and Way the 12/u 50m breaststroke and freestyle in 48.66 and 39.94.

Three of Wareham’s eight individual wins came in the 14/u age group – from 50m backstrokers Amelia Boyd (42.38) and Jordan Dobson (42.62) and in the 50m freestyle from Holly Puckett (35.72).

Mikayla Curtis claimed victory in the 11/u 50m butterfly in 48.69. She was also one of four Wareham swimmers who incurred so-called “speeding tickets” – disqualifications for swimming faster than the novice standard cut-off time.

Wareham also won six of the mixed relays.

Nine season tickets proved costly for Poole SC but they also won 12 events – including four relays – to secure fourth place at Bridport.

Rhys Barton was a double winner in the 11/u age group, taking the 50m breaststroke and butterfly in 52.58 and 49.74.

Nathaniel Gordon won the backstroke in the same age group in 51.73.

The 12/u age group produced individual wins from Joseph Miles in the 50m butterfly (44.57), Arran Mooney in the breaststroke (49.91) and Alex Bourne in the backstroke (44.91).

Joseph Palmer won the 10yrs 50m breaststroke in 59.69.

n Seagulls may have to consider selecting slower swimmers for next month’s final after picking up 10 “speeding tickets” at Two Riversmeet.

The penalties reduced their victory margin over second-placed West Dorset Warriors to just two points.

Winners included 11-year-old Harrison Lawton-Hurst in the 50m butterfly and nine-year-olds Darius Perkins in the 50m backstroke and Sam Chesworth in the 50m breaststroke.

For the girls, Melissa Green was a double winner in the 10yrs 50m backstroke and 25m butterfly, while Isabelle Scarratt won the 50m freestyle in the same age group.

Maisie Gormley and Ella Perkins won the 12/u and 14/u 50m butterfly respectively.

Emma Godden, 11, Eve Goldsack, 10, and 12-year-old Sophie Godden each won one event and missed a second win due to speeding tickets, while Chloe Roxburgh won the 12/u breaststroke.

Seagulls won seven of the 10 relays.

Harrison Penfold was a double winner for Bournemouth SC as they came third at Two Riversmeet, taking the 14/u 50m breaststroke and freestyle in 46.84 and 34.79.

In the same age group Barney Fry won the 50m backstroke in 42.90 and Ella Gleason the girls’ 50m breaststroke in 46.43.

Other winners included Max Remington in the 10yrs 25m fly (24.88), Megan Cocker in the 11/u 50m breast (53.25) and Jonathan Smith in the 12/u 50m free (40.18).

Adam Selby impressively knocked five seconds off his 50m breaststroke PB from the first round to pick up one of Bournemouth’s two speeding tickets.
