McRae breaks her own record in Sheffield

BOURNEMOUTH Dolphins’ 14-year-old Lottie McRae broke her Dorset junior 200m butterfly record at the Burns Meet in Sheffield.

She recorded a time of 2:26.62, shaving 0.21sec off the previous long-course record which she set at Millfield last year.

The time placed her 12th in the 14-15yrs event at one of the country’s top open meets featuring many of Britain’s best young swimmers.

She also clocked two national qualifying times as well as PBs in three of her four events, finishing 14th in the 100m butterfly (1:07.45), 22nd in the 200m individual medley (2:30.35) and 32nd in the 200m backstroke (2:29.17).

Few other swimmers were recording PBs due to the strict new rules on swimsuits, which came into force on January 1.

Team-mate Martin Littlefair, 16, came fifth in the 15-16yrs 100 and 400m freestyle (53.72 and 4:08.37) and eighth in the 200m free (1:57.55).

n Former national age group champion Naomi Vides won seven golds and two silvers to lead a hefty haul of medals for Ferndown Otters at the Maxwell Open Meet in Aylesbury.

The 15-year-old’s first win came in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:39.44.

She followed up with wins in the 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 50 and 100 breaststroke and 100 and 200m individual medley and second places in the 50 and 400m freestyle.

Fiona Hardie won the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke and was second in the 100m breaststroke.

Matt Collins also claimed a gold hat-trick with wins in the 50m and 200m backstroke and 50m freestyle as well as silver in the 200m free and bronze in the 100m medley.

Noah Vides came close to a clean sweep of the breaststroke events in his age group. He won the 50 and 100m events but had to settle for silver in the 200m.

Lucy Kirkham won medals of every colour including gold in the 50m freestyle in 28.55 – a time which would also have won the age group above.

She also took silver in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle and bronze in the 100m medley and 400m freestyle.

Phoebe Notley’s five medals included gold in the 50 and 100m freestyle as well as bronze in the 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke and freestyle.

Shannon Horton’s tally included gold in the 100m medley, silver in the 100 and 200m breaststroke and 200m medley and bronze in the 50 and 100m freestyle.

Luke Raggett took gold in the 100 and 200m butterfly, silver in the 50 and 200m backstroke, bronze in the 100m back and 200m medley while Ann-Marie Taylor won gold in the 50m fly (30.99) and freestyle (32.28) and silver in the 100m backstroke.

Gold proved elusive for Jeff Holtom but he had plenty of other rewards to smile about including a string of personal best times, silver medals in the 100 and 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke and bronze in the 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke.

Other Ferndown medallists included Zoe Taylor with silver in the 100m fly, Clodagh Dear with silver in the 200m back, Paige Chasty with silver in the 50 and 100 breast, Ben Fellows with bronze in the 50 and 200m backstroke, Grace Kingsley with bronze in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke and Jaz Hepburn with bronze in the 50m freestyle.
