Wong tops the list at Millfield


Ferndown Otters’ Alan Wong topped the honours list as eastern Dorset’s four leading clubs shared a medal bonanza at the Exeter Open Meet held at Millfield.

The 12-year-old national age group medallist left the 50m pool with five gold medals and one silver. His wins came in the 12yrs 100 and 200m butterfly (1:10.20 and 2:31.90), 100 and 200m backstroke (1:10.13 and 2:32.26) and the 200m freestyle (2:16.55).

But hopes of a golden monopoly were thwarted by Bath’s Tom Smith, who finished two seconds ahead of Wong’s 1:02.90 in the 100m freestyle.

Former national youth champion Fran Hughes, 17, also struck gold for Ferndown in the 16/o 200m breaststroke (2:46.41). She was also second in the 50 and 200m breaststroke in 36.42 and 1:18.06.

In the 12yrs age group, Stephanie Hughes won silver in the 50m breaststroke in 41.58 and bronze in the 200m individual medley (2:50.14).

Jasmine Holmes was Bournemouth Dolphins’ leading medal winner with gold in the 200, 400 and 1500m freestyle (2:30.55, 5:19.83 and 20:38.29), silver in the 100m freestyle 1:11.76 and bronze in the 200m medley (3:05.91).

Brother Jamie Holmes won gold in the boys’ 12yrs 200m breaststroke in 2:56.22 and silver in the 100m breaststroke (1:24.89), while 11-year-old Bradley Currie twice struck gold for Dolphins – in the 400 and 800m freestyle in 5:09.44 and 10:49.20.

So did Jay Olenicz in the 14yrs 50m backstroke and freestyle (29.19 and 25.91).

Tess Carter won gold in the 14yrs 200m butterfly in 2:34.87 and silver in the 100m.

Kiana Hooshmand won medals in all three 12yrs breaststroke events – gold in the 50m (40.54) and bronze in the 100 and 200m (1:24.73 and 3:03.60).

Jack Burton won gold in the 13yrs 400m medley (5:32.23).

For Poole, five swims produced five medals and five personal best times for 11-year-old Jade Norman.

She won gold in the 11yrs 800m freestyle in 10:46.88 and the 200m freestyle in 2:30.45, silver in the 200m backstroke (2:51.43) and 400m medley (6:06.44) and bronze in the 400m freestyle (5:16.42).

Harry Moore won gold in the 11yrs 200m butterfly in 3:02.67 and bronze in the 400m medley in 6:14.65.

Harry Kemp also collected a brace of regional times as he came first in the 10/u 400m freestyle (5:27.70) and third in the 200m backstroke (3:03.61).

Madison Kemp came home with two silver medals after coming second in the 11yrs 100 and 200m butterfly (1:21.66 and 3:03.16).

Katie Mills won bronze in the 15yrs 400m medley in 6:02.39.

Andrew Botros was Christchurch and New Milton Seagulls’ leading medal-taker with gold in the 11yrs 1500m freestyle (21:28.01) and 400m medley (6:12.13), silver in the 200m butterfly (3:02.67) and bronze in the 200m breaststroke (3:26.47).

Rebecca Simpson won a hat-trick of gold medals in the 15yrs breaststroke, winning the 50, 100 and 200m events in 39.08, 1:24.49 and 3:06.77, while Sophie Duffell struck gold in the 14yrs 1500m freestyle (20:07.26).

Megan Chapman and Alice Talbot both made the podium in the 13yrs 50 and 100m breaststroke. Chapman won the silver medals in 38.59 and 1:25.65 with Talbot third both times in 39.60 and 1:27.18.

Ben Wickens won medals in all three 11yrs breaststroke events – silver in the 50 and 200m (45.05 and 3:26.30) and bronze in the 100m (1:34.30).

Dolphins’ Joe Poynter, 14, now based at Millfield, won all eight of his events in his new home pool, while Amelia Maughan won three golds and a silver in the 13yrs freestyle races.
