JAY Lelliott says he is desperate to make his mark at the top of the sport after bringing down the curtain on his British Swimming Championships.

Lelliott had a busy week and finished in typically hectic fashion with the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle – his fifth and sixth events.

A time of 1:50.25 minutes in the 200m freestyle and 54.98 seconds in the 100m butterfly meant Lelliott missed the chance to swim in Saturday's final session.

But the Dorset star says he is targeting a big summer and has set his sights on next year's Olympic Games.

“My coach has given us 10 days off now, which is a luxury but it’s not too much of a break because I’ve got so much university work to do,” said Lelliott.

“Last year was just the start and there is a lot more to come from me. It’s too early to say that I’m going to be pushing the best but there are another couple of big swims coming for me.

“I’m going to embrace it. I’m in second year but I’m going to take a gap year in the build-up to Rio so I can have a really good crack at it and see what I can do in the next few months.

“I'm a little disappointed not to finish with a final but I have had a busy week and lots of races so I'm looking forward to the break.”
