POOLE’S Jacob Peters tasted the highs, lows and frustrations of sport in a single weekend at the South West Age Group Championships.

On the plus side, the 13-year-old won a gold and two silver medals at Millfield, broke three club records, recorded six PBs and improved three of his national qualifying times (NQTs).

But he was also denied another NQT by a timing debacle and ended the weekend with a knee injury which forced him to withdraw from the 200m individual medley (IM).

Peters’s highlight came in the 200m butterfly, which he led from start to finish to claim the gold in 2:21.60, 10 metres ahead of his nearest challenger.

Despite being unrested, he also took silver in both the 100m freestyle and butterfly in 58.56 and 1:02.56.

Peters took his form into the 4x200m freestyle relay, leading off the Poole team of Matthew Cochrane, Rafael Packham and Chris Parsons with a split-time of 2:05.7 – a five-second PB that was also 4.5 seconds inside the NQT.

However, due to the failure of the electronic timing system and the fact that the manual timekeeper did not record his split, it will not count for national qualification.

Peters, who is recovering from his injury following physiotherapy, will get another crack at the 200m freestyle time in the individual event this weekend.

Poole team-mate Teagan Graham battled through a strong field to come fourth in the 12yrs 800m freestyle in 10:15.38 (PB).

Ollie Weston carved eight seconds off his previous best to reach the 13yrs 200m breaststroke final (2:51.70), where he came sixth in a slower time.

  • Jemma Green joined in the Dorset gold-fest as seven Swim Bournemouth age groupers swam their way to the podium.

The 14-year-old slashed 10 seconds off her PB to win the 800m freestyle following a nail-biting finish. Her time of 9:29.89 was just 0.7sec adrift of the NQT.

She was also fourth in the 100m freestyle and recorded the fastest split time (2:11) to anchor team-mates Harriet Perfect (2:15), Megan Leaper (2:15) and Hannah Stonier (2:19) to bronze in the 4x200m freestyle in 9:02.31.

Matt Collins swam the race of his life to take silver in the 14yrs 1500m freestyle in a time that also qualified him for the nationals.

Ben Samuel won bronze in the 13yrs 1500m. Collins, Samuel and Ethan Bell also made the 100m freestyle finals.

Bronze also went to Ollie Fairman in the 11yrs 200m IM.

Jess Richens, 14, achieved her NQT in the 14yrs 200m butterfly.

Other Swim Bournemouth finalists: Morgan Long 5th 100m free; Richens 6th 200m IM; Issy Hepburn 6th 200m breast, 8th 200m fly; Izzy Pryce 6th 200m breast; Henry Stanbrook 7th 200m fly; Perfect 8th 200m IM; Trevin Michelo 100m fly.

  • Seagulls’ Abbie Peckham took five seconds off her long-course PB to make her first-ever final in the 200m butterfly in 2:48.74.

An eight-second PB earned Anashe Chisadza a place in her 200m butterfly final, where she came seventh. Team-mate Amy Mills crashed through the three-minute barrier to reach the 200m breaststroke, finishing eighth with a five-second PB.

Joe Noyce knocked 14 seconds off his PB to come sixth in the 12yrs 200m fly.

Max Weeks – the only 11-year-old against a field of 12-year-olds, as his birthday is tomorrow – faced a swim-off for a place in the 100m freestyle final, which he lost despite swimming over half-a-second quicker in 1:04.45.

  • BOURNEMOUTH Collegiate School’s Finn Trehane (pictured) will be heading for his first national championships this summer after striking gold twice at Millfield.

The 12-year-old came first in the 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley (IM) as well as winning silver in the 1500m freestyle. All three of his times were national qualifying times (NQTs).

Team-mate Zoe Gannaway also struck gold as she won the 13yrs 800m freestyle in a time that will take her to her second national championships.

The former Seagull was also fifth in the 100m butterfly and sixth in the 100m freestyle in which she set a second NQT in the heats.

Christian Tai made three finals, coming fourth in the 13yrs 200m butterfly, sixth in the 100m butterfly and 200m IM and setting an NQT in the 100m event.

Jack Arnell missed an NQT by 0.1sec as he came seventh in the 13yrs 100m butterfly.

Alesha Gibson was fourth in the 12yrs 200m breast¬ stroke and Honor Davis ninth in the 12yrs 100m butterfly.
