LUCY Brain became only the second girl since 2010 to break a Dorset junior record as she struck gold three times at the Portsmouth Northsea Christmas Cracker Meet.

The 14-year-old slashed 17 seconds off her previous best to win the 13-14yrs 800m freestyle in 9min 12.80sec.

The time put her almost six seconds ahead of her nearest challenger and shaved 0.13sec off the Dorset long-course junior record, set by Kim Rowles of Bournemouth Dolphins in 2007.

The time was also nine seconds inside the qualify-ing time for next summer’s National Youth Championships, when Brain will be one of the youngest in the 15yrs age group.

Brain’s other wins came in the 200 and 400m freestyle.

The only other girl to break Dorset junior records since 2010 is Bournemouth Collegiate School’s Beth Aitchison, and she too was setting the pace at Portsmouth.

The 16-year-old won gold in the 15-16yrs 50, 100 and 200m breaststroke (33.26, 1:12.94, 2:39.05) and silver in the 100m freestyle and 200m medley – all but the freestyle in national qualifying times.

Jamie Holmes will be joining Aitchison at the nationals after becoming BCS’s fastest breast-stroker with a bronze-winning national time of 1:08.72 in the 15-16yrs 100m event.

Max Rutherford and Jack Arnell also won gold for BCS at opposite ends of the dis-tance spectrum, Rutherford win-ning the 11-12yrs 1500m freestyle (19:37.76), Arnell the 11-12yrs 50m butterfly (31.10).

Swim Bournemouth’s Harriet Perfect, 13, will be heading for her second national age groups after winning the 13-14yrs 200m backstroke in 2:23.46.

Ellie Kerslake set a national time for the 50m backstroke as she won silver in 31.76.

Also striking gold for Bourne-mouth were Katy Hebditch in the 100m breaststroke, Jemma Green in the 100m freestyle and Ben Samuel in the 400m freestyle.

Noah Vides, Todd Price, Emily Clarke and Georgia Kemp all struck gold as Poole reeled in 26 medals at Portsmouth.

Vides won the 50 and 100m breaststroke in 31.08 and 1:10.64, Price the 400m medley in 4:48.88, Clarke the 800m freestyle in 9:26.83 and Kemp the 200m breaststroke in 3:11.82.

Madison Kemp’s two silver- and four bronze-winning swims in-cluded national youth qualifying times in the 100m butterfly (1:05.18) and 50m freestyle (28.03).

Jacob Peters also booked his ticket to the national age groups in the 100m backstroke as he won bronze in that (1:07.27) and the 200m butterfly (2:31.30).
