SWIM Bournemouth have been crowned Southern Junior League champions for the second year running.

The club’s nine to 12-year-olds were in dominant mood at the Link in Swindon, winning 24 of the 49 races to take victory in the final by 47 points from nearest challengers Weston-super-Mare.

The title takes them into the national junior league semi-final, when they will be hoping to match last year’s success by reaching the national final.

Head coach Emma Richards said: “We knew it would be tough against the other five teams in the league but every swimmer raised the bar to produce some outstanding performances.”

Double winners were nine-year-olds Seb Chacin, in the 25m freestyle and butterfly, Hermione Cull, in the girls’ 25 free and backstroke, Finn Trehane, in the 11yrs 50m back and breaststroke, and Morgan Long, in the 12yrs 50m butterfly and freestyle.

Other individual winners were Trevin Michelo, in the 11yrs 50m fly, and 12-year-olds Ben Samuel, Kelvin Wong and Izzy Pryce, in the boys’ 50m freestyle and breaststroke and the girls’ 50m breaststroke, respectively. Swim Bournemouth also won 12 relays.

Fourth in the final was enough to secure third place in the league table for Christchurch Seagulls.

Their race winners were Ben Nealon, in the 9yrs 25m breaststroke, 10-year-olds Aurelio Calipa and Nathan Gerrard, in the 50m backstroke and butterfly, respectively, and Jack Arnell, in the 12/u 50m backstroke.

Result: 1 Swim Bournemouth A 228, 2 Weston-super-Mare 181, 3 SX3 170, 4 Seagulls 154, 5 Bristol Penguins 148, 6 Trowbridge 143. Top six league placings: Swim Bournemouth A 41, Weston-super-Mare 39, Seagulls 35, SX3 34, Penguins 31, Trowbridge 29.

  •  Poole are hoping for a top-eight place in the Southern Junior League final table after surviving what junior coach Jan Hutchings called a “rollercoaster of a night” in the number two final at Bristol.

“We didn’t start well and found ourselves in fifth after 20 events,” she said. “But we showed character and strength which paid off as we fought back.”

Poole hauled themselves up to second place behind 2012 finalists Keynsham and one point ahead of Swindon Dolphin.

South West age group champion Jacob Peters was involved in five of Poole’s seven race wins. He took the 12/u 50m backstroke and butterfly, joined Oliver Weston, Lewis Harding and Rafael McCreath to win the medley and freestyle relays and anchored team-mates Tiara Cheney, William Trowbridge, Isabelle Leigh, Guy Selwood, Jasmine McCrea, Nick Burovs and Emmeline Ansell to victory in the cannon relay.

In the same age group, Harding won the 12/u 50m freestyle while, in the 10/u category, Guy Selwood won the 50m butterfly.

Sixth place in Bristol made Swim Bournemouth B the top B team in the league.

They recorded eight runner-up spots, including individual second places from Maisy Doucy and Marcos Hardy, in the 9yrs 25m freestyle, Ajay Coombes, in the 9yrs breaststroke, and 10-year-olds Rosie Holland (50 breast), Fran Gallimore (50 back) and Gray Omosevwertha (10yrs fly).

Result: 1 Keynsham 199, 2 Poole 177, 3 Swindon Dolphin 176, 4 Bath Dolphin 170, 5 Southwold 168, 6 Swim Bournemouth B 117.
