ALICE Tai broke her second British record at the British International Disability Championships and won her first international medal – but neither was sufficient to earn her a ticket to the IPC World Championships.

The 14-year-old Bournemouth Collegiate School swimmer clocked 1:12.19 in the 100m backstroke heats to set new figures for the S10 disability category and qualify for the multi-disability final at Sheffield.

But her record survived only a few minutes before being broken in a later heat by Tully Kearney, from West Midlands club Boldmere, who recorded 1:12.03.

Tai could not quite repeat her form in the final, finishing 10th in 1:12.86.

To compound the disappointment, Kearney was later named among 32 swimmers selected for the world event in Montreal in August while Tai missed out.

Tai’s first international medal was a bronze won in the 16 and under 50m freestyle final.

She was also the fastest S10 British swimmer after recording 30.27 in the heat and 30.39 in the final.

In the 100m freestyle, Tai slashed two slashed two seconds off her previous best to reach the main final with a time of 1:05.45.

She lowered this again to 1:05.42 to come sixth in the final and first among S10 swimmers As in the 100m backstroke, she is now third in the 2013 S10 world rankings.

In the 100m butterfly, Tai again reached the youth final, where she finished fifth in 1:18.23.

  • Swim Bournemouth’s Batian Thorpe won gold and silver medals as he helped Kenya to an overall victory against 10 other African nations in the Cana Zones 3 and 4 Championships in Zambia.

The 13-year-old Canford School pupil, whose family live in Kenya, won gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay and silver in the 4x50m freestyle.

He was also fifth in the individual 200m butterfly in 2:57.00, eighth in the 100m butterfly in 1:14.82, a three-second PB, and ninth in the 200m freestyle (2:23.49).

  • Poole's British masters record holder Jean Howard-Jones put two years of health issues behind her to win four gold medals on her debut in the 70-74 age group.

Her times for the 50, 100, 200 and 400m freestyle at the Guernsey Open Masters meet were 37.00, 1:24.69, 3:12.47 and 6:49.77.

She plans to swim at the British Masters Championships in Plymouth next month and in the European Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands, in September.
