Maddy Kemp is now the equal third fastest 14-year-old 100m butterfly swimmer in Britain after leading Poole to an avalanche of medals and qualifying times at Millfield.

Kemp was one of six Poole swimmers who recorded 11 national times between them on their way to a 48-medal haul at the high-class Taunton Deane Open Meet.

Kemp’s finest hour came in the 100m butterfly as she clocked 1:04.83.

Poole coach Robin Armayan said: “If she keeps up the hard work, she will be in contention for selection for the European Junior Championships next year.”

Kemp also won gold in the 50 and 100m freestyle, broke four club records and qualified for the national youth championships in July in the 100m breaststroke and 200m butterfly (1:16.49 and 2:25.77) as well as in the 100m fly.

Jacob Peters, who arrived at Millfield with three short-course national times already in the bag, upgraded two of these to long-course with times of 2:37.98 and 2:31.16 in the 200m butterfly and backstroke.

The 12-year-old then added a fourth event to his debut national age group programme with a time of 1:10.70 in the 100m butterfly.

His tally also included five gold and two silver medals and a club record.

Inez Griffin, 15, achieved her first-ever national qualifying time as she won bronze in the 200m breaststroke (2:46.10).

Armayan said the time was a reward for “five years’ hard work”.

“Inez has been an example of commitment and hard work,” he said. “She never gave up when things went wrong and it paid off eventually.”

Griffin also won gold in the 200m freestyle, silver in the 100m freestyle and bronze in the 200m medley.

Nationals regular Jasmine Holmes, 14, achieved her first qualifying times of the season – 2:09.65 and 4:35.13 in the 200m and 400m freestyle.

She won gold in the 200, 400 and 800m and set an age group club record in the 200.

Todd Price, 16, went under 60 seconds for the first time with a gold-winning time of 59.54 in the 100m butterfly – his second national time of 2013.

Dan Speers, 15, underlined his versatility with gold in the 100m backstroke and freestyle and a national qualifying time of 1:01.72 in the back – his weakest stroke.

“That’s very encouraging for his 200 individual medley,” said Armayan.

“It was good to see our swimmers looking sharp and fit despite not being rested for this meet. I was also pleased to see some of them going up to 15 metres underwater off the block.”
