Speedway: Bjarne's best for second-placed Danes

BJARNE Pedersen was granted his wish for Denmark to end up in the World Team Cup race-off at Vojens after he bagged an impressive 11-point haul in event one at Gorzow yesterday.

The Pirates star was controversially dropped by Denmark team manager Jan Staechmann last year.

But Poole Castle Cover’s rider marked his return to the national side with a storming heat 12 victory over Polish ace Tomasz Gollob.

Pedersen backed that superb triumph up with four solid second places as Denmark finished runners-up on 45 behind Poland, who dropped just seven points on their way to a mammoth total of 68 in front of their own fans.

Poland qualified directly into the final at Vojens on Saturday, while Denmark were joined by third-placed Russia, who got 31, in the race-off on Thursday on the same track.

The Czech Republic exited the competition after struggling to amass only eight points at Gorzow.

Pedersen, who has helped Denmark secure the Ove Fundin Trophy twice, in 2006 and 2008, was the highest scorer outside of Poland’s team in event one.

Gollob, Jarek Hampel, Rune Holta and Janusz Kolodziej all got 14 for the hosts, with Adrian Miedzinski grabbing 12.

Pedersen was backed up in the Danish team by Kenneth Bjerre and Hans Andersen, who both got 10, and Niels-Kristian Iversen and Nicolai Klindt, who both got seven.

Russia’s scorers were Artem Laguta (eight), Roman Povazhny (eight), Renat Gafurov (seven), Grigoriy Laguta (four) and Denis Gizatullin (four).

The outclassed Czech Republic’s scorers were Matej Kus (four), Lukas Dryml (two) and Ales Dryml (two). Martin Malek and Zdenek Simota got ducks.

Before event one, Pedersen had said he felt it would probably be better for Denmark’s overall chances of lifting the silverware again if they could “practice” in the race-off ahead of the final.
