Speedway: Watt waiting on Scandinavian GP call-up

DAVEY Watt has admitted he would jump at the chance of replacing injured Nicki Pedersen in next month’s Scandinavian Grand Prix.

The Danish ruled himself out of the World Team Cup with a broken shoulder blade.

And he faces a race against time to be fit for the next GP at Malilla in Sweden on August 14.

Pirates’ captain appears to be favourite to be called up for that meeting on the back of his captivating six-point performance in the British GP at Cardiff on July 10.

He was called up late to make his GP debut and race in the Millennium Stadium as a replacement for injured Emil Sajfutdinov. The Russian will probably be fit for the Malilla event, but now Pedersen feels he could be forced to miss out.

Watt is second reserve on stand by to step in and cover for rider absences behind first reserve Piotr Protasiewicz.

But the Aussie said: “Pepe is finished with the GP. He told me that. But from what I understand Emil will be back for Malilla.

“With it being a five-week gap between rounds, I think he’ll be there, but there is a doubt about Nicki.

“I said after I rode at Cardiff that I really enjoyed myself. I had a great time there.

“I think I proved I can ride at that level, win races and not just make up the numbers.

“If I get the chance to ride in Sweden, that will be fantastic.”

Watt, ironically, probably missed out on a semi-final place in Cardiff after falling off and being excluded when he came under strong pressure from Pedersen in his final qualifying outing.

The Aussie said: “I know Nicki will be out for a while. We ride together for Lejonen in Sweden.

“I was told on Wednesday he would be having a fair bit of time out, as was the situation with Emil through injury before.

“To be honest, I can’t get excited about riding in the next GP until I’m told it’s official.

“It’s still several weeks away and I think Nicki is one of the most determined riders in world speedway.

“If there is any chance of him being back riding at Malilla he will definitely do everything to be there. But if I get the chance, I will jump at it and do everything I can like I did in the last GP.”

n Poole Castle Cover’s scheduled Elite League clash at Ipswich last night was called off just after 5pm following heavy rain over Foxhall Stadium.
