DARCY Ward banged in his first paid maximum for Poole in their 57-35 home triumph over Belle Vue last night and then lamented: “It was just a pity my Polish club, Torun, weren’t watching.
“I’ve been dropped by them, so it was good to get a maximum to show them what I can do.”
The Aussie ace was in scintillating form as he scorched to four race wins and one second behind Pirates team-mate Jason Doyle.
His spectacular display helped Poole Castle Cover trump the Aces by 22-points in an Elite League Knockout Cup, quarter-final, second leg, tie.
Belle Vue had led 50-40 from the first leg, but table-topping Poole went ahead on aggregate after 10 races last night and eventually triumphed 97-85 overall.
Victory booked the Dorset club a last-four place and boosted their ‘double’ hopes.
Ward, who’d only dropped one point in each of Pirates’ previous two home meetings, told the crowd: “It was definitely one of my good nights.
“We started pretty slowly as a team and then everything clicked together.
“The track was good and it was a good meeting for me and the rest of our boys.
“It means we get two more meetings and it is more money for us.”
Ward, the reigning world under-21 champion, was particularly pleased with his five-ride paid maximum because he had been forced to spend Sunday kicking his heels.
He had been dropped by Torun for their home clash against Leszno after scoring only two points from seven rides in defeats at Zielona Gora and Tarnow in their previous two away ExtraLeague matches.
Pirates skipper Davey Watt, who notched six paid eight, said: “It was a fantastic display by the boys.
“We had a bit of pressure on us tonight because we had to get 10 points back.
“We didn’t start so well but we got it together and rode well by the end.
“Belle Vue rode well early on and showed what a good team they are, but we were the better team in the end.”
Chris Holder, who got 10, added: “Poole had never beaten Belle Vue in a cup competition over eight ties in 56 years before tonight so it’s good to get that monkey off our back.
“We were struggling at the start but came good in the end.
“It was great team work by the boys and hopefully we can go on and get to the final.”
Doyle, who also got six paid eight, said: “I went a bit better tonight. I got rid of my engine trouble.
“It’s not my year for engines.
“I shouldn’t be our lowest scorer every week. I’ve been getting fed up of it and don’t want to let the rest of the boys down.
“But I had a good meeting tonight and showed everyone what I can do.”
