Boycey backing for Watt

DAVEY Watt had the full support of Australian boss Craig Boyce to miss official practice ahead of today's Grand Prix semi-final qualifier in Sweden (start 3pm).

The Pirates heat leader lined up for his club at Coventry last night, putting Poole ahead of his personal ambitions by electing to forego practice at Motala yesterday.

Watt said: "Boycey knows practice isn't my strength anyway and I know he's fully in support of me missing it.

"When you have that kind of support from a rider like him who has great knowledge and experience, it gives you a lot of confidence to go further with it.

"I've only ridden at Motala once before and I had a broken wrist at the time. That was about three years ago, so I've got very little knowledge of that track. But that's okay. I've done the same at other tracks and gone well.

"Even if I had ridden there I wouldn't have ridden there since last year so no matter what, it would have been a long time since I had ridden there."

Watt added: "I need to get in the top seven or eight, I'm not sure which, to get into the final at Zielona Gora, Poland, in September.

"I've been drawn in the toughest round, but in saying that, I know I can beat everyone and that's what I'll try to do.

"I know the World Cups have been the biggest meetings of my career so far, but for me personally it's a big achievement to get to this stage.

The other semi-final takes place at Terenzano, Italy, at 8pm tonight.
