Zetterstrom hurt in high speed collision

INJURED Pirate Magnus Zetterstrom is hoping to ride again this weekend after missing their cup match against Swindon last night.

Zetterstrom sustained a crack to the knuckle in his left hand after colliding with team-mate Jesper B Monberg (formerly Jensen) at high speed in the Swedish League on Tuesday night.

The Swede, who also sits out tonight's cup return at Blunsdon, said: "Luckily nothing is broken.

"I'm fortunate because there were three of us, including Sebastian Ulamek, going down the straight on the first lap.

"Seb, on the inside, went wider and wider and there was no space for me between Jesper and the fence on the outside.

"I got caught between the fence and Jesper and my foot rest hooked onto the fence. I just went from 40-50 miles per hour to zero in two-three seconds."

Speaking from his Eskilstuna home last night, Zetterstrom added: "There's a big crack between my wedding finger and my middle finger.

"It's just so sore and big and I wouldn't be able to hold on to the handlebars, so there was no way I could ride against Swindon in the cup matches.

"The doctors had put me in a full hand plaster on Tuesday and that made me think something was broken and I would be out for three to six weeks.

"But then I went for X-rays on Wednesday and there weren't any break.

"There is an Elite League handball team in Eskilstuna and in that sport you get a lot of finger injuries.

"I'm going to see their sports specialist doctor on Thursday and will probably have some sort of laser treatment on the hand.

"My hope is I will ride in an open meeting on Saturday in Poland and in a league match there on Sunday.

"That's my hope but as I'm feeling how I have no chance of holding the handlebars, so we'll have to wait and see."

Swindon were without Troy Batchelor last night after he sustained a suspected broken elbow in a spill during practice at Leszno on Monday.

The former Pirate, who misses tonight's return at Swindon, is likely to be out for four to six weeks.

  • Antonio Lindback looks set to miss Craig Boyce's Farewell Meeting at Poole next Wednesday.

Boyce, speaking from the centre green last night, told Pirates' fans: "Anton was a definite until three days ago, so I'm pretty disappointed."
