Pirates sweating on Skornicki's fitness

PIRATES have their "fingers crossed" Adam Skornicki will be fit for their double header against Wolves.

Skornicki took a heavy knock during last night's meeting at Ipswich where Poole won 51-41 when his left hand was hit by Robert Miskowiak's back wheel on the first turn.

Fortunately, it was not his right wrist.

That is the one in which he broke his scaphoid in a fall at Swindon in March that he heavily straps and continues to ride with.

But the Poole rider felt a lot of pain in his left wrist and was quick to use an ice pack to bring down the swelling.

As his first thoughts were he didn't believe any bones were broken, Skornicki went out for the re-run before taking a long rest ahead of his final outing in heat 14.

Pirates team manager Neil Middleditch said last night: "Adam hurt his wrist again, and we're hoping there is nothing wrong with it.

"We've got his old club Wolves at home on Wednesday and then we're at Monmore Green on Monday, so it would be bad timing if he was ruled out again.

"Adam said he could do the re-run but we pulled him out of heat 10 as a precaution so he could try and rest his hand.

"Because he never withdrew from the meeting injured, he had to come out for his third ride in heat 14, but he was happy to do so.

"He feels there is nothing broken but sometimes when you wake up in the morning things can feel different. You never know.

"Fingers crossed he will be okay. We'll check with him in the morning and hope he is okay because he can be a real trump card for us against Wolves.

"We don't want our Pirates injury jinx this season to continue."

Skornicki, who got two paid three last night, is due to ride in Sweden tonight.

He has already sat out away league meetings against two of his former clubs, Wolves and Belle Vue, earlier this term through injury.

They, and another missing trip to a third small track, Lakeside, were all "winnable" fixtures with a fully fit and firing Skornicki, but Pirates lost them all without the Pole.
