PIRATES are marking their 70th anniversary season by asking the club’s supporters to vote for their seven greatest riders.

‘The Magnificent Seven’ will feature one Poole racer from the 1940s, 50s and 60s, two from the 70s and 80s and four from the 1990s and 2000s.

Voting will take place on the club’s Twitter page over the coming weeks before the definitive line-up is revealed at press and practice.

Pirates chief Matt Ford told the club website: “This is a great way to remember heroes of the shale and I hope our amazing supporters get involved and have their say.”

Voting is due to start tomorrow and will run weekly, with the 1940s-1960s kicking matters off.

Twelve riders selected by legendary club historian Gordon Day will be available to vote for in each era, four at a time.

Day said: “It was a tough ask to select 12 riders from each era.

"I’m sure I have left out someone’s favourite but I’m very much looking forward to seeing the Poole faithful’s ‘Magnificent Seven’.”

Fans should keep an eye on Pirates’ Twitter handle @poolespeedway for more information. Supporters can get involved in the selection debate via the hashtag #PiratesSeven.
