MATT Ford has praised the contribution of James Shanes to Pirates' cause this season – but says the rookie reserve needs to ride more.

Poole boss Ford signed Puddletown racer Shanes on a 2.00 average at the start of the season, making no secret of the fact it would give him more points to play with higher up the order.

Having consistently stated there is little pressure on Shanes, Ford has registered his delight at the 20-year-old's efforts.

However, he also urged the youngster – whose only other shale racing this year has come through guest bookings – to seek more track time at other clubs.

Ford said: "I've got no complaints with James, he has more than done his job. His average is up to around 2.8 and if everyone put 0.8 on their averages, we would be top of the league.

"Good luck to him. He is still in a sharp learning curve. I wish he was riding more because the more track time he gets, the better he will become.

"He could have a good career in the sport, he just needs to be riding more.

"Fair play to him, he has done his job and fingers crossed he can play his part in some success."
