POOLE'S James Shanes has revealed the thinking behind his celebration – he cannot do wheelies.

The 20-year-old scored a superb 12-point paid maximum on his Wimborne Road debut in the Premiership Shield second leg against Wolverhampton.

Having kept out Jacob Thorssell to earn second place in heat four, Shanes stopped by the finish line and lifted his hand to his ear, resulting in even louder cheers.

The winter recruit did the same after banking his first Pirates heat victory in his final ride, sealing a 4-2 which won Pirates the tie.

Explaining his celebration, Shanes said: "I used to do it at Kent quite a lot and it was well received there. I can't pull wheelies so I needed to do something!

"I'm trying to learn how to do donuts but I haven't quite mastered them yet.

"There are not really many showmen in speedway now but I've always thought you should try to be a showman."

Shanes did not know his final outing had sealed overall victory for his team.

He added: "I think I only knew what had happened around the time of heat 14 when someone said the meeting was won.

"When I'm in the pits I have no clue what the score is. Sometimes I don't even know what race it is!"

Meanwhile, Jack Holder will partner fellow Pirates racer Brady Kurtz in tonight’s SGB Premiership Pairs at Somerset.

Krzysztof Kasprzak had initially been inked in to ride but Holder took the place of the Pole.
