DARCY Ward fully supported the decision to abandon the season-opening meeting held in his name.

The Darcy Ward Invitational, staged on Friday to raise funds for the wheelchair-bound former Pirates star, was stopped after eight heats due to unsafe track conditions at Wimborne Road.

Ward said: "I feel totally gutted for everyone who turned out to support me in my time of need. I was pumped by the large numbers that attended but, unfortunately, the weather was against us.

"I also feel for the Poole promotion who were placed in an impossible position. I fully support and understand the decision of the riders. Safety has to come first."

In the wake of the call-off, Pirates have reduced ticket prices for Wednesday's SGB Premiership Shield second-leg clash with visitors Wolverhampton.

Adult and concession tickets will cost £12 apiece with under-16s admitted free. Season ticket holders will receive a free programme on the night.

Reflecting on the reductions, Pirates owner Matt Ford said: "I hope this goes some way in making it up to the majority of Friday's crowd, who made such a great effort to attend and support a truly worthwhile cause.

"We thank everyone for being so understanding."

Ward and Ford were speaking to the club website.
