INJURED former Pirates star Darcy Ward is to return to Wimborne Road as part of a whistle-stop tour of Europe.

The Australian has been undergoing intense rehabilitation Down Under following the crash which left him with serious spinal injuries last summer.

Ward last appeared at Pirates' home in October when he gave an emotional interview to presenter Nigel Leahy at his benefit meeting.

The two-time world under-21 champion will turn out at Wimborne Road for an hour-long question-and-answer session after Poole's home meeting with Wolverhampton on Wednesday, August 3.

There is no admission fee for the event in the Champs Bar (9.30pm) as Ward is keen to repay the generosity shown by the countless fundraising initiatives that have taken place on his behalf.

Ward, due to be accompanied by partner Lizzie on the night, said: “The support I have received has been overwhelming.

“I want to be able to thank everyone properly and I hope that as many people as possible will come along to meet me and Lizzie at Poole. It will be great to catch up with all our friends and I know it will be a great night.

"We are planning to have a free raffle for everyone that comes, so someone will go home with a unique souvenir.

"Of course, if people want to donate to the foundation we would be delighted but the night is not about the money, it’s about giving back.”

Ward will be in the UK for a relatively short period and has plans to attend the World Cup at Belle Vue as well as a couple of Pirates fixtures.

The 24-year-old is also expected to visit Poland and Sweden as part of his trip to Europe.
