KYLE Newman is praying for Pirates asset Darcy Ward after the Aussie sustained serious injuries in Poland.

Poole reserve Newman admitted that Swindon loan star Ward had been one of the best team-mates of his career to date and revealed how he had provided plenty of help in the pits.

Newman and Ward both held team spots at Pirates last year as Neil Middleditch’s side claimed back-to-back Elite League titles, although Ward missed the latter stages of the season due to a ban.

And the 23-year-old Newman said that Ward’s generous approach to meetings had left a lasting impression.

Newman told the Daily Echo: “I think what has happened to Darcy has stunned and shocked everybody. We are praying and hoping that everything turns out okay and that he makes a recovery, because he is a great lad and speedway needs him.

“I think he’s one of the best team-mates I’ve ever had. He’s always there for advice and help and he’s a really great guy in the pits. He’s always good for a laugh.

“You can see on the track he’s one of the best team riders in the sport and off-track he is always making sure you are okay with your set-ups. He is a fantastic team-mate to have in your team.

“I think that has showed at Swindon this year because every one of their riders has upped their game. He brings that impact into the team and that’s why you need him about.

“Everyone is in unison in the respect that they are absolutely gutted at what happened on Sunday. We are really praying he pulls through okay.

“There has not been a bad word said over the past day or so, everyone has just been praying and hoping that he makes a full recovery.”

Pirates team boss Middleditch and Poole riders Chris Holder and Davey Watt showed their support for Ward by journeying to Poland to be at his side.

And Newman feels that the trio’s gesture shows the strong relationship that Ward has created with his fellow club members.

Newman added: “Chris, Davey and Middlo have flown out there and that just shows the bond that Darcy has with all the boys and with Poole in general. It is a fantastic effort for them to get out there and show their support."

“Hopefully, he is in good hands and it will all come good.”

Following yesterday’s postponed clash against Swindon – in which Ward had been scheduled to ride – reigning champions Poole are not set to return to action until Monday, when they are due to visit strugglers Leicester.
