TEAM boss Neil Middleditch admits heads may have to rule hearts over the immediate future of Poole Pirates star Darcy Ward.

Ward, 22, is currently under suspension from all speedway after failing an alcohol test at the Latvian Grand Prix in August last year with the Aussie Ace’s frequently-postponed hearing now due on January 30.

The Daily Star this month reported that the validity of the test had been called into question but with uncertainty prevailing and two Pirates team spots yet to be filled, Middleditch revealed the club’s next move could be imminent.

“We still don’t know what’s happening and we may make an early decision,” said Middleditch. “Matt (Ford, promoter) is away for a few days but it all depends on how long we can wait.

“If Darcy does get a lengthy ban at the end of the month then the riders we want might end up elsewhere.

“It is a tough call but Matt has a proven track record with making these difficult decisions. Whatever he decides, he will have my full support.”

Meanwhile, Poole have been handed a tough start to their quest for a third consecutive Elite League crown.

Middleditch’s men kick off with a two-legged Elite Shield showdown with last season’s title rivals King’s Lynn and head to Norfolk for their first league fixture, followed by the traditional Good Friday double-header against Swindon.

Middleditch added: “King’s Lynn were top dogs for a lot of last season until we knocked them off so that will be an interesting start.

“It is always nice to have a derby day with Rosco (Swindon manager Alun Rossiter) but it represents a really tough opening few fixtures for us.”
