DECORATED Davey Watt admitted he would relish a captain’s role at Poole Pirates but stressed that a three-year absence could count against him.

The Queenslander has won four Elite League titles and two Knockout Cups with the Wimborne Road club and skippered the double-winning septet of 2011.

Following three seasons at top-flight rivals Lakeside, the Pirates asset made his return to the south coast for 2015 and is one of five names on the team sheet to date.

A skipper for the upcoming campaign has yet to be named and Wimborne-based Watt said he would be ready to take on the armband if required by promoter Matt Ford.

Watt told the Daily Echo: “It was a fantastic experience to win the league with Poole as captain. I’d be more than happy to take it on again but I have no idea what Matt’s plans are.

“He’s going to have his own ideas and I don’t know if it will be my role because I haven’t been in the team for a few years and am an old fella now!

“He will make the decision on that and if I’m that guy then great and if I’m not, I will support the captain 100 per cent, whoever it may be.

“That’s what we need to do, we need to be a unit and support each other.”

Watt, who celebrated his 37th birthday yesterday, has set up a 2015 deal with Polish outfit Wanda Krakow and could also feature in the German and Danish leagues.

The former Eastbourne rider believes Pirates have put together a strong side with the likes of Chris Holder, Dakota North, Kyle Newman and Paul Starke already on board.

He added: “I’m super-impressed with the line-up. Chris is world-class and he’s proved that again and again. I think he’s in for a really great season.

“Kyle made rapid progress last year and I can’t see that slowing down. Dakota has had time to settle in England and has come on leaps and bounds.

“I don’t know a lot about Paul Starke but I know he puts in some big effort and that’s what we ask for.

“It’s all pointing in the right direction. They are a great bunch of guys to be around and as a team it looks fantastic.”
