KYLE Newman suffered another injury setback as Poole Pirates endured a night to forget at in-form Wolverhampton.

The home-grown reserve got tangled up in the second re-run of heat 12 and further aggravated an elbow injury picked up riding for Plymouth Devils last month.

It compounded a miserable night at Monmore Green for Pirates, who never recovered from Wolves pouching a pair of maximums from their opening two heats en route to a 55-38 success.

Team manager Neil Middleditch told the Daily Echo: “The injury Kyle picked up in Croatia over the weekend has flared up again and it looks like he could be out for a couple of meetings.

“He has been advised to go and have an X-ray. Hopefully, it is not broken but I think he needs to rest, otherwise he will just keep making it worse.

“It is the same one he hurt a few weeks back so we have to be careful and make sure he feels right.”

Poole suffered a dreadful start as Freddie Lindgren went from last to first within the opening two laps of the first, while Newman ran wide to bring up the rear in heat two.

Jacob Thorssell’s mechanical failure at the start of heat five gave Pirates a lifeline with Chris Holder’s victory enough for a 4-2 advantage but Ricky Wells immediately led the charge to a third Wolves maximum.

Dakota North picked up a race win but Poole remained 10 points behind and it was down to fellow Aussie Holder to arrest the slide.

Sent out on a tactical ride, the 2012 world champion halved the deficit by flying out of the traps and became the first man to beat Wells with a six-point haul.

But the joy was short-lived as Newman ran wide and failed to recover as Lewis Blackbird and Thorssell claimed a one-two.

Pirates were 11 behind when all four came back for a re-run of heat 12 with Newman locking up and colliding with Josh Bates and Poole guest Lewis Rose on the first bend.

Blackbird won the third attempt with Newman forced to sit out.

Wolves bagged another maximum in heat 13 as the rain began to lash down, while North and Holder carried the fight to the last with victories at the final two.

On the meeting, Middleditch added: “Wolverhampton were very smart from the start. We just didn’t have an answer but there were positives to take from it.

“Chris Holder seems to be getting back to form and it was nice to see Davey (Watt) putting in a lot of effort, even if he didn’t get the rewards. There were some good signs.”

  • Chris Harris will guest for injured skipper Maciej Janowski in the return against Wolves on Wednesday (7.30pm), while Charles Wright is likely to step in for Newman.

STAR RIDER – CHRIS HOLDER

Hard to argue that anyone shone on the night but Holder was the beacon of hope for Poole with three race wins, including one in his tactical ride.

Mixed form has seen the 2012 world champion surprisingly drop to a second-string berth but a dominant display in heat five finally kick-started his side.

Showed his will to win with victory in a rain-soaked nominated heat, despite nothing riding on it. His best is yet to come.
