SIMPLY sensational. Bravery, guts and sheer determination, take a bow Dawid Stachyra.

A man boasting an average of just 4.19 really had no right to produce such an imperious display.

Let alone after he had hauled himself off the shale following a terrifying, full throttle smash into the air-fence.

Not only did he gate well, the Pole showed the speed, skills and spirit which can only endear him to Poole fans.

As he conducted a centre-green interview following his four blistering wins, Stachyra also demonstrated no shortage of modesty to describe his exploits. “To be honest, the crash looked nasty but it wasn’t nasty to me,” he said, to mystified faces all round in the grandstand. “I’m okay.”

Having bounced back from his sickening spill, the 27-year-old was far more than okay. He was Pirates’ first maximum man of the campaign.

The sun finally made an appearance here tonight and so did the real Poole Pirates.

After the rain-offs and misery of 2012, clear, bright blue skies at Wimborne Road proved a sight for sore eyes.

But the most welcome presence was that of a home side which began to find something approaching top form.

Although a depleted Eastbourne outfit hardly offered the most daunting of opposition, Pirates were superb.

Stachyra led the way while Australians Chris Holder and Rohan Tungate were also influential performers. Throw in some stunning work from Maciej Janowski and the hosts simply had too much for the poor Eagles.

Pirates made the perfect start when Stachyra rocketed from the traps to be joined by Darcy Ward, who got across Bjarne Pedersen from gate four to guide his colleague to an unchallenged 5-1.

Eastbourne immediately returned the favour when impressive guests Kevin Doolan and Dakota North, in at reserve for unavailable duo Lukas Dryml (ill) and Denis Gizatullin (shoulder), hit back in style.

But when the maximums kept coming, this time it was Pirates on song as Dennis Andersson made the gate to register his first win since returning as Robert Miskowiak’s temporary replacement. Holder edged past Simon Gustafsson on the back straight before helping Andersson home.

Doolan somehow held off a scintillating last-lap charge from Janowski, just edging his rival by the narrowest of margins on the line, to claim a breathtaking shared fourth race.

Holder looked much more like his old self when he easily took the honours as heat five finished all square.

Stachyra was able to walk away after demolishing the air-fence as a potential thriller unfolded in heat six. After brilliantly storming past Cameron Woodward, Stachyra clattered the barrier after Woodward had already hit the deck under pressure from Ward. The Australian sensation was disqualified from the re-run, to the surprise and anger of the home faithful, but the mood soon lifted as Stachyra showed serious character to get back in the saddle and defy the hard-chasing Woodward.

Janowski set a season’s best time round the Poole circuit as he left his rivals in a cloud of dust in another 3-3.

The unbeaten Stachyra and Doolan then locked horns in heat eight and there was no doubt about the victor as Stachyra blitzed his opponents, with Doolan rolling home last after taking a tumble.

Holder survived a late scare as he just beat the aggressive Woodward to the chequered flag in race nine.

The inspired Stachyra combined for another 5-1 with Ward and once Janowski had hammered tactical riding Pirates legend Pedersen, Poole led 38-30.

Smooth Tungate rocketed round North to join Holder on a 5-1 before fast-starting Janowski again got the better of Pedersen after Ward had been excluded following a fall in heat 13.

The impressive Tungate again turned on the style before Janowski completed his exceptional evening with some fireworks to down Woodward and Pedersen as Pirates sealed a lucky 13th win of the night in a fitting finale.

And after four defeats in their previous five Elite League outings, such a dominant display could hardly have come at a better time.

  • Belle Vue today apologised for their decision to controversially postpone Monday’s meeting with Pirates. The Speedway Control Bureau are investigating the matter.

The Aces statement added: “The decision to postpone the meeting was the wrong one but was made for, what was believed at the time, the right reasons.

“Clearly, after further investigation, this has proved to be an error of judgement made in the heat of the moment and is regretted. For that, we are genuinely sorry.”
