DAN Halsey admits he feels “a little bit bad” about replacing local boy Kyle Newman in Buccaneers’ team this year.
But at the same time the former Rye House rider insists he played no part in a controversial episode that saw the Poole-based teenager unexpectedly exit the Wimborne Road club.
Halsey, 21, said: “I spoke to Garry May and Neil Vatcher about what happened and I think they thought I was on a different average – then my average changed.
“They’d already signed me and intended signing Kyle, so I felt a little bit bad about what happened after my average went up.
“It’s not down to me though and I’m sure Kyle will be back at Bournemouth in the future, if all goes well.”
Halsey, who practices with Buccaneers team-mates Karl Mason, Aaron Baseby and Kyle Howarth on the Isle of Wight tonight, added: “I was looking to get away from Rye House.
“I’d been there five years and it was time to get away to gain more experience on a bigger and different track.
“I spoke to a couple of other teams, but as soon as I was contacted by Garry and Neil I knew I wanted to go to Bournemouth.
“At first I was just looking for a loan deal. Then they got back to me and said Matt Ford wanted to buy my contract out.
“Now, if I can have a good season as a Poole asset, I should have a good future.”
n Pirates captain Davey Watt, team manager Neil Middleditch, Buccaneers boss May and skipper Herne will answer fans’ questions during a ‘Quiz the Panel’ night at Poole Stadium tomorrow.
The event, in the Champs’ Bar, starts at 7.30pm and is organised by the Poole Rider Equipment Fund organisation.
Admission is £4 for REF members and £5 for non-members.
