Herne in no rush to get back on a bike

JAY Herne insists he isn’t going to rush his return from injury after having a skin graft on a horrendous “shark bite” wound next to his knee over the weekend.

Buccaneers’ captain, who sustained the injury when he crashed in the Australian Longtrack final at Tamworth 10 days ago, underwent surgery on Saturday.

Speaking to the Echo from his hospital bed in New South Wales, Herne said: “I saw the doctor and he said it had been a pretty simple operation.

“There was no problem and I just have to stay here for 10 days.

“Basically, I’ve just got to do what the doctor says because with a skin graft, you can’t really rush it.

“I still want to get back to Britain as early as I can but at the same time I don’t want to risk putting the healing process back.

“So I have no timescale on getting over there because it’s all about getting the knee right first.

“It’s a bit of a waiting game. It’s very frustrating, but it’s what I have to do.”

Herne added: “They took skin from the same leg just above the knee and put it over my knee.

“The area above the knee is probably sorer than it is on my knee. It’s like a burning feeling.

“I can’t bend my knee for 10 days. It’s in a cast that slides on and off, but I’m just leaving it on.

“At home I’d have to keep the leg in a sling for five more days, so you can see it’s very frustrating.

“My mum and dad, Phil and Debbie, and my brother Lee were here over the weekend, though, and Lee gave me his laptop, so I’m watching cricket on TV and going on the internet.

“I’m getting a copy of the crash on DVD. Todd Kurtz, who won the meeting, is sending it to me.

“I’d like to have a look at it to see what happened because my helmet got cut open so badly and I got concussed.

“I want to see if it was my fault, whether I hit a hole and why my bike lifted so high.”
