KATE Macgregor set her sights on Rio 2016 after recalling the “incredible” experience of making her Olympic debut on home waters.

The 22-year-old was the youngest member of Team GB’s sailing squad when she lined up alongside sister Lucy Macgregor and Annie Lush in the women’s match racing class last summer.

One of the medal favourites going into the Games, the Poole trio finished seventh in Weymouth after their exit at the quarter-final stage one year ago today.

Kate Macgregor (pictured) returned to Southampton Solent University to complete her business management degree following London 2012.

And having gone back to school to finish her studies, she is also busy learning a new sailing discipline after match racing was dropped from the Olympic schedule.

She told the RYA’s official website: “It really doesn’t feel like the Games was a year ago. We didn’t get the result we wanted at London 2012 and we were really disappointed about that.

“But the home crowd and the whole experience was just incredible and you wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Macgregor added: “After the Olympics, I had another year of university to do, so I had to go back and complete my last year at Southampton Solent. That was the priority straight after the Games and I then had a little bit of time to think about which boat I wanted to move into.

“I knew that I wanted to campaign again for Rio and, in January, I started sailing the 49erFX. I am really glad I chose that.

“It is a great boat and very different to what I am used to.

“I am looking forward to the summer and focusing completely on sailing and looking forward to our worlds at the end of September.”

Sister Lucy Macgregor is also aiming for a place at Rio 2016 and she is competing in the new Nacra 17 multihull alongside team-mate Tom Phipps.
