DYNAMIC duo Rob and Jackie Dobson (Jeronimo) were crowned Class One winners in the Poole Winter Series.

The 10-week competition came to a conclusion last weekend with several podium places up for grabs.

Early on in Class One, it had been Ian Braham’s Enigma and Alan and Lis Bennett’s Blue Jay that made the running.

But light airs during the latter part of the series suited the Dobsons’ big J (Jeronimo).

The pair made a second-half surge with five straight wins to finish ahead of runner-up Bra-ham and the Bennetts in third.

Matt Hardy, meanwhile, broke the recent domination of Duncan McCarthy in the J24 fleet.

Parkstone’s Hardy, with his Sublime, won 10 of their 18 races to finish ahead of McCarthy, who had to settle for a series second.

Terry Dinmore’s Captain Moonlight headed the Class One A table at the halfway stage with three wins from four races, but was always shadowed by Ian Wall’s MG27 Mojito.

Wall’s dominance, with three straight wins at the end, saw Dinmore relegated to an also-ran with Bill Frewin’s Addict II stepping-in to fill the second spot.

Brian Thompson and Ivor Graham took third with their Dehler, Deity.

Class Two’s battle of the Sonatas was occasionally broken by Chris Hawkes’s GK24 Minx, but Kevin Cross’s Snotty, Selene, came out on top ahead of his son Joe in another Sonata, Presto. Minx took third.

At the end of the Class Three series there were level points for John Milner’s Linota and Barrie Walsh’s Calico. Walsh won the trophy on countback with Kevin Giles’s Soup Dragon in third.

The One Design R19 fleet saw boats taking turns to win a race. Only towards the end did Steve Brown’s Rolo edge ahead, with Julian Peach settling for a close second.

The Poole Winter Series was another successful collaboration between the Poole and Parkstone clubs.

Poole hosted four fleets from its in-harbour line, while Parkstone started the big Class One boats and J24s out in the bay.

Poole Commodore Laurie Thornton-Grimes presented the trophies, ably assisted by his Parkstone counterpart Barry Rolfe.

There are two fun races scheduled for the festive period.

Parkstone host a handicap fleet race on Boxing Day with a probable start at Brownsea Road.

And, on New Year’s Day, there is the traditional pursuit race off the Poole YC line. Start times are calculated in advance so email me at echosailing@rocketmail.com and I will pass on your details to the organisers.
