Rugby: Dunn says Lions can bounce back

DIRECTOR of rugby David Dunn backed his wounded Lions to come back firing after they had been condemned to an unwanted hat-trick.

The National Two South new boys suffered a third consecutive defeat when they lost 21-6 at Dings Crusaders on Saturday.

Their task gets even tougher in the next two matches as they prepare to host high-flying Shelford before a trip to leaders Henley.

But Chapel Gate chief Dunn has faith in his players and insists they will be determined to stop the rot by upsetting the odds.

He told the Daily Echo: “We now have two tough games against Shelford and Henley. They have both been going really well so we really needed to win the game at Dings.

“We have got to cause an upset now to reach our next target. I expect the players to be firing on all cylinders again this weekend.”

Dunn insisted he had been happy with his team’s latest performance at Dings after they were forced into key changes, with the likes of Sam Hardcastle and Frazer Wilford unavailable.

“We had targeted the game for a win but we ended up taking a rearranged team there due to unavailability,” said Dunn.

“I was pleased with the performance considering the players we had missing.

Alan Manning had to play at hooker and he did a great job for us. Ben Stevenson had to move from fly-half to scrum-half in Sam Hardcastle’s absence. All of that disrupted us a little bit.

“It was always going to be a big ask. We restricted them to two tries but couldn’t cross the line ourselves and that is most unusual for Bournemouth.”

Stevenson’s two penalties were all depleted Bournemouth had to show for their efforts at Landseer Avenue. The result saw Lions slip to ninth in the league table.

Dunn, meanwhile, praised the performance of player-coach Tim Collier after the former professional had played “extremely well” in his first 80-minute run out of the campaign.

Lions: Drake, Edwards, Connolly, Chislett, Stewart (Grace, 50), Pollard, Stevenson, Carrel (Spikings, 72), Manning, Featherstone, Collier, Forrest, Booth, Dunkerley (O’Brien, 72), Hart (Hughes, 50).

This is a very big step up in standards, the volume and extent of travel needed and time that takes , makes it difficult for an largely Amatuer Club to always have it's players available. These are difficult times and the job comes first. Win the home games is the priority and to stay in the competition, should be the aim this Season . Good luck on Saturday.

I’m not entirely sure I agree with Cherryfarmers comments re sackin !however I think David Dunns needs to have a close look at himself following his comments! How can you praise someone who received another 10 minute sinbin!! (Average points again team with sinbin7) To move onwards and upwards out of this league Bournemouth is going to need to recruit heavily in the backline, the forwards should contend

As a forward in rugby union you're always treading a fine line between competing and offending, I don't have a problem with Tim Collier's yellow card it was just one of those things. I was at Ding's Crusaders, it was a shame it was Tim as he provides a lot of the grunt that drives the pack and in Division 2 South we really need him on the pitch but hey these things happen in sport. Regarding David Dunn, he's a good coach and the side do well under his tutelage, rugby is not wendyball, we don't "sack" coaches because of the occasional loss, let's not lose sight of the fact that the Lions are now playing at the highest standard ever achieved by a Dorset club and David Dunn has played a major role in that success. We just need to consolidate our place in Division 2 South and then we can attract more players in from our large catchment area.

It is still early days in the league, 6 games do not reflect a whole season. The quality is definitely there to compete and compete well in this league. The team needs to adapt a little bit more than they have done so far to this league as they cannot always play the running backs rugby which we all love to watch, especially with the winter fast approaching.
It seems keeping possession is key to this league.
