Rugby: A marriage made in Sevens heaven

THE Bournemouth Sevens could have celebrated its first marriage – after a rugby-mad couple last week tied the knot.

And as the scene of the proposal was the popular festival, the Chapel Gate showpiece could lay claim to having played a major role in the romance.

After Tim Flower led Oakmeadians to South West Cup glory at last year’s Bournemouth Sevens, he had a huge grin on his face.

But while collecting the coveted trophy with a dramatic victory over bitter rivals Bournemouth no doubt tasted sweet, he had other reasons to smile.

The flanker, a solicitor with Preston Redman when he is not terrorising fly-halves, chose the festival weekend as the time to pop the question to his girlfriend.

And Laura Bishop, a rugby and netball player and president of Oakmeadians ladies, said yes. The pair were married at Honeybrook Farm, Wimborne, six days ago.

“We had only been together a few short months at the first Bournemouth Sevens and we had a great time that weekend,” 29-year-old Flower explained.

“That was where the relationship developed and, a year later, I decided it was time to pop the question.

“We went to a friend’s house to get changed before we went back to the festival for the Saturday evening so I proposed then.

“We went back on the Saturday night, I got quite drunk and then we won the South West Cup the next day!”

The Daily Echo-backed event returns to town this weekend, with the main action kicking off tomorrow morning and continuing long into Sunday evening.
