Convincing win for Lions

BOSS David Dunn was delighted with a rousing six-try first-half display that saw Bournemouth wrap up a convincing 58-31 victory at Reading.

Lions’ three-quarters were let loose early as Karim Lynch (two), Rory Hearson, Eddie Edwards and Michael Pope, along with hooker Frazer Wilford, all dived over before the break.

Dunn said: “We’d done the job by half time. We were 43-0 up by then. The game was over really.

“The challenge to our players was to go away and do it on the road, and they did it.”

Dunn’s side scored second-half tries through Pope and Chris Hughes to stretch their lead to 58-12 with 15 minutes still to go.

Bournemouth, for whom hot prospect Pope added six conversions and two penalties to end up with a personal points tally of 28, climbed up to fourth in National Three South West following their fifth straight league success.

But Reading, who Lions had defeated 37-8 at home in September, made the final scoreline more respectable when they grabbed three late tries to grab a bonus point.

Bournemouth: K Lynch, Hearson, Edwards (Stewart, 58), Payne (Dunkerley, 63), Pope, Ngapaku, Chislett, Burns (Wareham, 54), Wilford, Manning, Ford (Burns, 54), Collier, Armstrong, Dunkerley (Stanton-Ketchley 63), Hughes.

Oakmeadians eased their South West One East relegation worries with a resounding 54-25 home success over Trowbridge.

• North Dorset’s outside chance of securing a Southern Counties South play-off place was all but extinguished by their 34-20 defeat at Tadley.

Tom Dymond-Andrews, Luke Spicer and Toby East scored tries for North, with East adding one penalty and one conversion.

North were hindered by the loss through injury of cornerstone of the pack David Stickland (shoulder) and scrum-half Robbie Sampson (calf) before the break.

• Dorset & Wilts’ crushing 52-0 triumph at Berkshire in the National Under-20s Championship was marred by a broken collarbone injury to prop Bertie Beanland.

The Twin Counties’ final regional qualifier is against Oxfordshire at Chapel Gate on March 14.
