Sevens: Revenge for Oaks

BRENDON Daniel led Oakmeadians to a thrilling Bournemouth Sevens triumph and then revealed that he could ply his trade with the club next term.

The former Bath and New Zealand sevens star played a key role as Oaks avenged last season’s South West Cup final defeat to Bournemouth by shocking the Lions at Chapel Gate yesterday.

In a fitting finale to another successful festival, Oaks claimed the South of England Cup honours with an exciting 26-24 victory over their fierce rivals.

And after catching his breath following the last-gasp win, Daniel admitted he thought Oaks had lost it.

The large crowd were treated to a fine show of rugby and it looked as if the host club would again claim the local bragging rights when they scored with six seconds remaining to take a 24-21 lead.

But James Croker’s Oaks, whose tries came from Malakai Magnus (2), Junior Korobaiu and Angelo Flammia, hit back to score with the last act of added time.

A delighted Daniel said: “We tried to implement a system which was easy to play, considering it was a group of players who’d never played together before.

“We lost to Bournemouth in our second group game and they were a lot more physical than us and we had to see what we could do to counteract that in the final.

“I used to play on the wing when I was in the Premiership and when I played New |Zealand sevens but I found myself in the forwards being one of the bigger lads.

“But it worked out well. It’s great for Oakmeadians as a club and probably for the town in general to rekindle that rivalry with Bournemouth.”

The Kiwi added: “My girlfriend is studying up in Newcastle so my priority is her, but I haven’t had a contract sorted out in Newcastle.

“If that’s not possible then I’ll definitely look at coming down and playing for Oaks.”

Meanwhile, Oaks Ladies were beaten by the Moody Cows in the semi-final of the National Ladies’ Cup.

Swanage & Wareham lost in the quarter-finals of the South of England Cup.

'considering it was a group of players who’d never played together before.'
The only way Oaks can beat Bournemouth is to bring in a team of outsiders. Can hardly call themselves Oakmedians can they?

Sounds like someone has got their knickers in a twist?! You have got to be one of the following; a disgruntled Bournemouth fan, an ex Oakmeadian who never made the grade, or someone who has a chip on their shoulder?! First and foremost the tournament is an innovative idea where it aims to promote the beauty of the game and to provide some fun times away from the stresses of life. Your comments are not needed and are not in the spirit of the Bournemouth 7's. We're not playing in the IRB 7's, the Bournemouth 7's is an invitional tournament, if a team wishes to bring in some ringers, who cares? I'm sure the fans watching didn't give a hoot, I can imagine they were enthralled by the game and were left wanting more; which can only be a great thing for rugby especially in Bournemouth. Which is surely the aim?! Back to the term "ringers" used earlier; Brendon Daniel has been associated with the club for a number of years, playing, coaching and advising, the rest of the team have also played for Oakmeadians in the past and present. The most henious comment of all is the comment made about not being Oakmeadians?! What! What makes an Oakmeadian? An Oakmeadian is someone that pulls on that jersey, who has pride, someone that wants to be part of a team, sharing the same collective goal in being the best they can be, and providing pride and recognition of the work that goes on in that club behind the scenes. All these players are Oakmeadians and all buy into the ethos of the club, which is to support each other off and on the pitch, play rugby to the best of their ability, and have alot of fun doing it!

Being a former player from both Bournemouth and Oakmeadinas, I have fond memories of both clubs. I have played in some great derby games and I think that hopefully with Oaks promotion and with Croker, on board as Coach the club is moving in the right direction and I hope that one day soon that those local derbies will be occur again in whatever league!
Embrace the rivalry don't tarnish it!

Go Oaks! I miss you guys!

Quality Oaks.
Even better if it puts Bournemouths nose's out of joint. Maybe if they took themselves a little less seriously they'd enjoy the game more, lol.

I was told the whinging would start from the bournemouth crowd.... AND IT WAS LONG COMING.... The truth is that they are a very unsporting bunch, and are well noted by many rugby clubs for this weakness. Well done OAKS Your players have always had a strong attachment to the club and were proud to turn out for them on Sunday... Accept it Bournemouth you were second bestand stop making false assumptions.and look into your own short comings
