Bourne to go for a Lions’ share!

BOURNEMOUTH will be looking to go one better than Manchester United and clinch five trophies this weekend.

The Chapel Gate outfit have five teams in Dorset & Wiltshire Cup final action, with their impressive second team taking on Chippenham at Sherborne tomorrow (3pm), before the thirds face North Dorset at Swanage’s Bestwall ground on the same afternoon.

David Dunn’s Lions will then defend their Twin Counties title against old rivals Swans at Dorchester on Sunday (3pm), with the club’s two colts teams in action against Wimborne and Corsham at North Dorset’s Slaughtergate HQ on Sunday afternoon (2.15pm). Head coach Dunn said: “We’re delighted to have reached all the finals.

“I’m especially pleased for the two colts teams and this is where the work that has been done by the colts coaches really shows.

“I won’t commit to how many we can win, but we are rubbing our hands together about the thought we might go one better than Manchester United!

“United proved on Sunday, though, that you can’t take anything for granted whatever level you play at.

“We’ll pick up the trophies one at a time and see how many we end up with on Sunday evening.”

For Dunn’s Lions, Sunday’s final comes just eight days after they failed to reach the South West One play-offs, following defeats to Weston-Super-Mare and Clifton and Saturday’s draw against Redingensians.

Dunn added: “It’s a nice way to finish the 15-a-side season and although we weren’t successful in our last three games, we still finished third in the league which is the best finish the club has ever had.

“It’s another game that we won’t take lightly, though, and everyone recognises Swanage’s run of success in this cup. Yet again they have beaten Chippenham in the quarter-final, who play in the league above them, and they came through a really tough semi-final against Oakmeadians.

“Last year’s final proved that, although we play higher up, they won’t lie down. We only really won it in the last minute so we’re not taking the challenge lightly.

“We’re full of confidence, though, because of the level of rugby we’ve been playing week-in, week-out.

“It’s about the way we execute on the big stage again and if we can get it right, we’ll have too much for them and we’ll be too powerful for them.”
