TEAM manager Dan Draper described as a “satisfying win” Wimborne’s revenge victory over Southern Counties South neighbours Sherborne.

Skipper Declan Foley led from the front with two tries as the Minstermen kept the heat on leaders Swanage & Wareham by registering a 37-8 triumph at Leigh Park.

Fourth-placed Sherborne had headed east bidding to chalk up a double following their narrow 22-20 win over Wimborne in October but left well beaten.

Boss Draper said: “All in all, it was a satisfying win over one of our closest rivals in the league standings with periods of good, open rugby played by both teams.

“That said, our handling, which is usually a strong weapon for us, let us down on more than one occasion when other try-scoring opportunities could have extended the scoreline quite considerably.”

Wimborne, playing only their second match in six weeks, understandably looked a little ring-rusty in the early stages and fell behind to a penalty inside 10 minutes.

However, in what has become their customary style, the hosts quickly shook off their early uncertainties and forged ahead.

Running the ball back from a Sherborne kick out of defence, Ryan Maidment found himself forced towards the touchline inside the visitors’ 22.

He managed to find space to deliver an astute chip to Tom Moysey, who was first to gather and twist his way through to cross the line with Joe Bartlett converting.

Wimborne gained a foothold for the remainder of the first half and built up a commanding lead with two further tries from skipper Foley and a Maidment penalty.

And once they had secured the bonus point thanks to Doug Robertson’s try, there was only going to be one winner, although Wimborne were mindful of their recent win over North Dorset when they had relaxed their grip in the final quarter.

But there would be no repeat as two further scores confirmed their superiority.

Firstly, Steve King showed considerable strength to make the line before Maidment went over for a try which he duly converted after Robertson had punched through the Sherborne defence.

In between, Sherborne replied with a try following a sustained period camped on the Wimborne try line.
