SWANAGE & Wareham climbed to the top of Southern Counties South after another bonus point victory, reports Gareth Davies.

Bath-based Combe Down were dispatched with ease at Bestwall as Swans crossed the whitewash seven times in a 45-14 triumph.

Dan Collins and Joe Desmond put the hosts in control during a feisty opening 40 minutes with Keith Tomes’ side extending their lead after the break as Zach Wyburgh, Kirk Jones (2) and stand-in skipper Robert Elford all touched down.

Hooker Elford, who took over the captain's armband after regular skipper John Sheldrake had suffered a nasty looking ankle injury, still feels there is more to come from Swans.

“Once again, we won without being at our best,” said Elford.

“We never really got into top gear against Combe, which was frustrating.

"But not playing well and still winning can still be viewed as a positive, especially winning by a big margin.”

With the mouthwatering Dorset & Wilts Cup final against Trowbridge just two weeks away, Elford feels Swans do need to raise their game, something he believes they side are capable of.

“After the Combe game, the boys all agreed that we’re not quite where we want to be at the moment," added Elford.

"But, hopefully, next week it will all click at Devizes ready for the cup final against Trowbridge.”
