WINGER Wyn Roberts called on his Bournemouth team-mates to draw inspiration from their Lazarus-style comeback at Bishop’s Stortford and pull off the Great Escape.

Roberts ran in two tries as Lions brought to an end their 15-match losing streak in the most dramatic fashion, battling back from a 16-point deficit inside the final quarter-of-an-hour to win 33-28 at Silver Leys.

The 27-year-old winger got over the line on 66 minutes before a converted effort from Jack Hennings saw Budge Pountney’s men home in on their rocking hosts.

Roberts then mustered Lions’ fifth and decisive try as the Chapel Gate outfit registered their first National Two South success since October.

Bournemouth remain some 15 points from safety with just eight matches to play but Roberts, who has scored four tries in his past four outings, believes victory in their five home games will be enough to stave off relegation.

Roberts, a player who gained National League experience with Jersey before switching to the South Coast, told the Daily Echo: “It was nice to just get that win after so long.

“When you have suffered so many losses you start to lose faith. We play a really exciting, expansive style and that is sometimes our downfall.

“We never seem to score the easy try, there always seems to be something flamboyant about what we do without doing the simple things as well as we should.

“Even though we were behind, we still created problems and once we got the try we knew that one more score would put us in with a real shout. We kept going and deserved everything we got.

“We knew from the start that it was a match we could win and while the boys were pretty elated, there was also a realisation that this has to be the start of something.

“Our next two games are at home to Clifton and Exmouth and if we can win those two and get on a roll then we might still pull it out of the fire.

“Most of our games are against teams who are comfortable and not going anywhere this season while we still have everything to play for.

“If we can win five of the remaining eight then I think that will be enough and it is doable.

“Realistically, we have to win all of our home games but the next two are massive for us to gain the bit of momentum we’ll need if we are to stay up.”
