Lions chief Budge Pountney: We have exceeded expectations
6:00am Friday 18th October 2013 in Rugby
LIONS director of rugby Budge Pountney believes table-topping Bournemouth are exceeding expectations after their flying start to life under his guidance.
The former Scotland captain has enjoyed a dream opening to his tenure with four wins and a draw from six National Two South matches.
Lions returned to the summit after exploding out of the blocks against Redruth to lay the foundations for victory by building a commanding 39-17 lead with 15 minutes to play last Saturday.
Pountney’s men were forced to withstand a late rally before holding on to secure a 39-32 win. And the director of rugby, who succeeded David Dunn during the close-season, is calling for more consistency when they visit mid-table Canterbury tomorrow (3pm).
Pountney said: “We are looking forward to it and we are looking to improve again, with less of a Jekyll and Hyde performance.
“It was a bit of a learning curve for everybody against Redruth. More than anything, it was complacency.
“As a team, we have to be able to drive it home and that is what we have to work on.
“If you had asked anyone at the club if we would be sitting at the top of the table after the first couple of months, we would have said ‘That would be very nice – we will take that’.
“We are only in the early part of the season and there are a lot of factors that will affect what happens. Are we exceeding expectations? I think we probably are.
“These guys are good players and they have really taken on board the hard work we have put in to keep pushing them.
“We can’t expect it to just happen for us.”
