Rugby: Dramatic derby win for Wimborne
6:00am Wednesday 25th September 2013 in Rugby
The Minstermen had taken a 20-point lead just after the interval but proceeded to push the self-destruct button before eventually making it two wins from two in Southern Counties South.
In the rivals’ first league meet-ing since 2010, a tight opening quarter passed without either team troubling the scoreboard.
But Wimborne gradually gained the upper hand and took the lead through Jim Brokenshire’s first try of the afternoon. Nick Bolton, James Mikolajewski, Tyler Adams and Matt Christopher were all involved in the spell of pressure which saw the ball recycled to Brokenshire, who finished the move in some style.
Mikolajewski missed the conversion but made amends with a successful penalty to extend to eight points the visitors’ advantage.
Declan Foley’s break proved the driving force behind Wimborne’s second try as fly-half Ryan Maidment touched down, with Mikolajewski’s conversion putting Mark Sturney’s side firmly in the driving seat.
And when Brokenshire dived over in the corner for his second try just after half-time, Wimborne appeared to be sitting pretty.
However, the pendulum quickly swung back in Swans’ favour when Wimborne conceded a soft penalty which home skipper Robert Elford drove over the line before Charlie Parish added the extras with the boot. And when Swans were awarded a penalty try in an incident which saw Wim-borne’s Sean Murphy sin-binned on 53 minutes, it was game on with Parish’s second kick reduc-ing the arrears to just six points.
The pressure eventually told when Ollie Andrews followed up good work from Swans scrum-half Chris Tomes to score with 10 minutes to play, but Parish’s final conversion drifted wide and Wimborne stayed in front during a tense finale to claim the local bragging rights.
Swans: Baird, Rowberry, Moriarty, Cottrell, Wilcox, Parish, Tomes, Audley (Wyburgh, 54), Elford, Andrews, Burgess, Collins, Corsie, Jones, Desmond (Penney, 43).
Wimborne: Adams, R Brokenshire, Tinsdale, Watson, Christopher, Murphy, King, Foley, Llewellyn, Maidment, Bolton, Ratnam, Hamer, J Brokenshire, Mikolajewski, Unwin, Samways, Tarbard.
- In London Three South West, Ellingham & Ringwood continued their 100 per cent record with a 38-20 home win over Eastleigh.
Winger Dan Stewart grabbed two tries with Dominic Pitt, Andy Turner and Duncan Soden also on the scoresheet. Charlie Cockram kicked three penalties and two conversions.
Ellingham & Ringwood player-coach Phil Osman said: “This was a good win over a strong Eastleigh side. I was very pleased with the performance of the whole team and particularly our captain and number eight Duncan Soden, who had an immense game”.
- In Dorset & Wilts One South, leaders Oakmeadians secured a 28-19 victory against North Dorset II, while Blandford won 32-0 at Frome II.
