Donald responds to Rose charge

Bournemouth Echo: Luke Donald Luke Donald

Luke Donald responded to being caught by Justin Rose with back-to-back birdies and took a two-stroke lead into the final nine holes of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The defending champion, who needs only a top-eight finish to replace Rory McIlroy as world number one again, lost the outright lead when he three-putted for a six at the long fourth. But after missing a five-foot chance on the next he rolled in putts of 14 and 18 feet to reach 12-under-par.

Rose was 10 under and then came former Open champion Paul Lawrie on nine under, after he eagled the fourth and birdied the sixth and 11th.

Dubliner Peter Lawrie was five strokes back after running up a triple bogey seven on the eighth, where he hooked into the trees and then chipped into water.

Donald widened the gap to three with a 25-footer on the 10th, Rose missing from 15, and both then birdied the long 12th, Donald despite driving into sand.

Paul Lawrie found himself five back in third as a result of his bogey on the 13th, where he pulled his drive and was over the green in three.

Donald remained three ahead with three to play, although he had to get up and down from sand on the short 14th.

And it appeared all over bar the shouting when Donald holed from nine feet at the 16th and Rose, plugged in sand for two, bogeyed to drop five behind and alongside Paul Lawrie in second.
