A suspected drug dealer who shot a police officer during a routine stop has been jailed for 15 years.

Jermaine James, 21, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of attempted murder and having a gun.

Police constable David Davies, 27, was shot at twice as he chased James in Notting Hill, west London, in May last year.

James, of Marsh Farm, Luton, Bedfordshire, admitted having a revolver but denied attempted murder and having the gun with intent to kill.

PC Davies refused to let go of the suspect despite being shot in the leg.

A second bullet passed through the officer's shirt narrowly missing his shoulder.

The shooting happened during a routine patrol in Kensal Road about 10pm on May 14.

PC Davies, who was posted to Kensington and Chelsea borough at the time of the shooting, has since moved off the borough.

Detective Sergeant Neil Lemon, of the Metropolitan Police Shootings Team said: "We are extremely pleased with the result of this trial. It sends out a clear message to anyone who shoots at police that they can expect a severe penalty on conviction."
