As a youngster, I never used to think I’d run in the Olympic Games.

It just seemed so out of reach and unattainable. It was a dream.

As I improved and started to win national standard races and represent Great Britain in other international events, that dream became more of a reality.

My first selection for Team GB came in 2004 at the Athens Games.

I had secured my marathon spot the previous year in Berlin by running inside the standard set by the National Governing Body (NGB), which in my case was UK Athletics.

I remember that amazing feeling when I first heard I’d been picked for Team GB.

It makes all the hard work worthwhile as it represents the pinnacle of many athletes’ careers.

As London 2012 draws closer, NGBs have started to pick teams and athletes up and down the country are realising dreams when called up to represent Team GB.

As we’ve seen recently, in some sports team selection is not always clear and without controversy.

Some athletes are left euphoric while others are left extremely disappointed.

One of the best things about hearing you’re going to represent Team GB is the knowledge that the support you are going to receive from British fans will be superb.

I’m sure this is going to be even more amazing with the Games being at home.

With less than 50 days to go until the opening of the Olympic Games in London, those athletes that have been selected are turning their attention to being at their best for their event.

I’d urge you to find some Team GB athletes to support as they prepare and compete. Your support could make all the difference!
