Lee making a new start with old putter
 |
| Lee James |
DISGRUNTLED Lee James has ditched his new putter in an attempt to revive his flagging fortunes on the European Tour at this week's Italian Open.
The Parkstone-based touring professional has missed six consecutive halfway cuts and has slipped to 213th on the money list.
His latest failure came at last week's Spanish Open when his poor putting saw him miss the qualifying mark by five shots after successive two-over-par 74s.
"My game was in good shape from tee to green, but my putting let me down on the second day," explained James. "I was two under par at one stage in the second round and in with a good shout of making the cut until I three-putted my ninth hole.
"I only missed three greens all day, but took 37 putts and you just can't do that at this level of competition," added James who tees off in Milan on Thursday.
"This week I shall go back to using my old putter I last used nine months ago. It has the same shaped head but is a standard length rather than the shorter version."
James's problems were compounded by the first re-rank of the season for category 11 players. The former British Amateur champion has dropped from seventh to 25th position.
"Hopefully a change of putters will do the trick," said James. "I've slipped down the pecking order on the rankings and need to start making some cuts."
The slide meant that James was only first reserve for next week's lucrative Irish Open at the Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort.
But on his arrival in Milan today, James was told that he had made the starting line-up.
