DORSET leader Matt Hector played a pivotal role in the county’s first South East League victory of the season against Surrey at Came Down.
The Ferndown star beat England international Andrew Cooley 2 and 1 in the opening singles match to spur on his team-mates to a 6.5 to 5.5 success.
“Matt thrives on the added pressure of being number one,” explained Dorset captain Iain Donnelly. “When his score fed back to the players on the course, it gave them a major boost.”
This season’s improvement in the foursomes once again paid dividends as the hosts chalked up two victories for a share of the spoils at the halfway mark.
Came Down’s Matt Walker and Daryl McMahon (Yeovil) were the star performers with a 4 and 3 success over England pair Cooley and Ben Rickett.
David Cook (Parkstone) and Luke Joy (Broadstone) matched their team-mates’ scoreline for Dorset’s second point of the morning.
Cook and Joy followed Hector’s example in the afternoon by both notching up 2 and 1 wins in the singles middle order.
Walker then claimed a crucial half point to leave Ferndown’s Tom Leech needing to win his match against Surrey captain Simon Crockett.
And Leech didn’t disappoint, winning 3 and 2 to secure Dorset’s first points of the 2009 campaign and avenge last year’s 10.5 to 1.5 loss away to Surrey last year.
Dorset’s final game of the four-match league season is at home to Sussex at Ashley Wood on August 30.
Dorset team: Matt Hector (Ferndown), Matt Walker (Came Down), Daryl McMahon (Yeovil), Luke Joy (Broadstone), Andy Windsor (Ferndown), David Cook (Parkstone), Giles Legg (Ferndown), Tom Leech (Ferndown).
Dorset’s other SE League results: Dorset 4.5 Hampshire 7.5, Kent 9 Dorset 3.
