MARTYN Thompson’s hopes of making a third Open appearance were dashed on the final few holes at Western Gailes today.
The Parkstone professional was tied third after an opening round 70 on Monday, before slipping back to joint 24th after a second-round 75.
On three-over-par, Thompson was five shots short of the qualifying mark. Just four players from each of three final qualifiers booked their place at Turnberry on July 16-19.
Thompson was level par for the day after 13 holes, and needed to pick up at least two birdies to climb the leader board.
But a double bogey at the 14th scuppered his chances.
Thompson, who played in his first Open at St Andrews in 1995, dropped further shots at the 16th and 18th. His other appearance was at Carnoustie in 1999.
Fellow Dorset professionals Paul Jones (Canford Magna) and Shaun Webster (Ferndown) also failed in their Open quests.
Jones finished tied 66th at Kilmarnock after rounds of 79 and 71 for a four-over-par total – 14 shots behind the qualifying mark.
Webster, meanwhile, slumped to 88th place at Gails Links (Glasgow) after rounds of 79 and 81 – 21 shots behind fourth place.
Amateurs Ben Stow (Rushmoor) and Kevin Garwood (Ferndown) finished 76th and 82nd respectively at Gails Links and Western Gailes.
