FERNDOWN Golf Club's Kevin Spurgeon has been made an honorary member of the Professional Golfers' Association.

The PGA's executive committee unanimously approved a proposal by the South West Region committee to accord West Parley-based Spurgeon that status.

The committee took into account the commitment Spurgeon had shown to the association since turning professional.

Affectionately known as 'Spurge', the former Dudsbury and Isle of Purbeck club pro won nearly £400,000 during 11 years on the European Senior Tour.

He earned his solitary tour triumph at the inaugural Mauritius Open in 2009.
